Donald Judd x Puiforcat

Stories Editor's Pick Donald Judd x Puiforcat

Decades in the making, the beautifully minimalist dinner service designed by Donald Judd in the 1980s is finally brought to life by Puiforcat. A limited edition of pieces in sterling silver to cherish and collect.

For over 200 years, the House of Puiforcat has epitomized the art of silversmithing, blending tradition and innovation. Over time, the brand’s unmistakable hallmark—the letters E and P in a diamond—has become the symbol of an exceptional legacy, with a distinct aesthetic rooted in the classical and Art Deco movements. Having revolutionized silverwork in the mid-20th century with designs characterized by architectural lines and functional elegance, eschewing unnecessary ornamentation, Puiforcat continues to craft the timeless classics of tomorrow. This avant-garde approach includes notable collaborations that began with none other than Salvador Dalí. Part of the Hermès group since 1993, Puiforcat has been partnering with contemporary designers while seeking out exceptional collaborations. The latest, decades in the making, is finally available in a limited edition.

This new collection is an exclusive dinner service by Donald Judd, a striking set of plates, tumblers, serving bowls, and cups in silver, originally designed by the great artist in the late 1980s. Judd needs no introduction; a pivotal figure in 20th-century art, he is one of the most important representatives of Minimalism. His work emphasized simplicity, geometry, and the materiality of objects, challenging traditional notions of sculpture and painting. By focusing on basic forms, such as cubes and rectangles, and using industrial materials like steel and plexiglass, Judd redefined art as something to be experienced directly, without the need for symbolism or narrative. His innovative approach to space and form influenced not only visual art but also architecture and design, making him a key figure in the development of modern art and minimalist aesthetics.

With this same approach, Judd designed a set of objects for the table that never entered production during his lifetime. Finally, thanks to the collaboration between Flavin Judd, the artistic director of the Judd Foundation, and Puiforcat, the original sketches have been brought to life after a painstaking process of many attempts to deliver the perfect piece. The striking designs in sterling silver epitomize Puiforcat’s unmatched technical prowess in crafting minimalist yet flawless lines and shapes. This unique collection includes dinner, bread, soup, salad, and dessert plates, as well as serving bowls and tumblers. Each piece is numbered and stamped with Puiforcat’s emblematic diamond-shaped logo.

Puiforcat

Puiforcat’s signature style is rooted in the classical and Art Deco movements. Louis Victor Tabouret, who joined the family business in the late 19th century, drew inspiration from 16th and 17th-century royal silversmiths, enhancing the brand’s repertoire with elegant silver hollowware. In the mid-20th century, Jean Puiforcat revolutionized silverwork with his Art Deco designs, characterized by architectural lines and functional elegance, eschewing unnecessary ornamentation. This avant-garde approach continues to define Puiforcat’s aesthetic. Today, Puiforcat is celebrated for its blend of tradition and creativity, crafting the timeless classics of tomorrow while paying homage to its storied past.
