Few designers carry two cultures as literally as Nada Debs, who spent her childhood in Kobe, Japan, before studying at RISD and eventually settling in Beirut, the city her family had fled. Her furniture reads like a translation exercise between Japanese minimalism and the Arab craft heritage of marquetry, wood carving and mother-of-pearl inlay practiced for generations in the workshops of the Levant. She calls the result Contemporary Arabesque, a language of clean geometry and intricate handwork that lets centuries-old technique speak in an entirely contemporary accent.

Cut from a single block of clear acrylic resin, the C Occasional Table uses traditional marquetry technique to set mother-of-pearl, brass or stainless steel directly into the transparent material, so the inlay appears to float mid-air rather than sit on a solid surface. It is perhaps Nada Debs’ clearest fusion of Beirut craft and a distinctly modern material, sliding as easily beside a sofa as her original wooden C table.

Nada Debs grew up up in Japan from a Lebanese family and graduated from the Rohde Island School of Design in the US. With such a cosmopolitan and prolific background, Nada Debs has the ability to distil culture and craftsmanship to create pieces with emotional resonance. Her style defined as “Contemporary Arabesque” blends her influences from her Lebanese family and her Japanese childhood as she magnifies oriental handicrafts with a hint of Japanese materials.
