Branco & Preto was a pioneering Brazilian design collective founded in 1952 by six young architects who rebelled against the neoclassical design conventions of the era.

The Palhinha Chair, with its tapered legs and hand-woven straw seat set in ebonized wood, is characteristic of the furniture Branco & Preto designed in 1950s Brazil, when the architect-founders believed furniture should share the clean, straight, elegant lines of the modern buildings rising around them.
