Pair of Black Mambo Cushions

An African-inspired linen cushion, born from a group of undocumented textiles found in the north of Ivory Coast. Jennifer Shorto’s research linked their graphic rhythm to Mondrian’s arrival in New York, when he first heard Boogie-Woogie music and began translating its syncopated beat into paint. That same syncopation carries through here: three colour blocks in red, white and ochre march across a striped ground of indigo and black, the pattern landing with the same off-beat regularity as the music that inspired it. Shorto’s background as a textile historian and collector, trained at L’Ecole du Louvre, shows in the precision of the repeat and the confidence of the palette. Part of her wider African Collection, the print suits interiors built on bold graphic contrast, paired with plain linens or set against dark walls where its rhythm can hold its own.
