Since the seventeenth century, the Mobilier National has served as the guardian of France’s decorative arts heritage, commissioning and preserving furniture for the French Republic’s most prestigious residences and embassies. In recent years the institution has opened its collections to a new generation of makers, selecting only a handful of contemporary designers each year whose work is judged worthy of entering the nation’s permanent patrimony, alongside centuries of royal and republican craftsmanship.

The Dark Ribbons Desk, conceived by Lebanese-French architect Aline Asmar d’Amman, translates her signature dialogue between couture and construction into a limited edition of just eight pieces. Best known for reimagining Karl Lagerfeld’s suite at the Hôtel de Crillon and for her collaborations with Cartier and Aïshti, Asmar d’Amman folds metal into ribbon-like planes finished with a gradient patina, so that the desk reads less like a workstation than a piece of wearable architecture, poised and sculptural.
