The son of a sculptor, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance’s approach to design has never strayed far from the chisel and the block. Founder of the Paris studio Neonata, he builds a body of work that moves fluidly between furniture, sculpture and architecture for houses such as Hermès, Baccarat and Saint-Louis, now working from Lisbon chiefly in sculpted and assembled marble, producing pieces in small, tightly numbered editions that read as much as artworks as they do furniture.
Limited to 12 pieces, the Le Baiser bed is built from two overlapping upholstered forms, shown here in Pierre Frey’s cream-toned Viggo fabric, with the smaller petal curling tenderly into the larger one to form the headboard’s silhouette. The design can be produced to bespoke dimensions and paired with a custom king-size mattress from Lit National, a premier French bedding house, ensuring the sculptural form is matched by an equally considered night’s rest. The overall shape is intended to evoke a cloud, a quiet promise of enchanted sleep.
Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance is a French designer who explores a wide range of disciplines and materials, which merge into a distinctive body of work. Born in the south of France in 1974, he followed in his father’s footsteps, by studying sculpture at the École nationale supérieure des arts appliqués et des métiers d’art, then earning his design diploma at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. In addition to his spectacular private and commercial projects –including an iconic chalet in the Alps – Noé creates exceptional pieces of furniture in very limited editions. After discovering the breathtaking landscapes of Portugal and the country’s rich craft traditions, he has launched Made In Situ, a design studio that pays tribute to Portuguese storied artistry.
