Her work moves fluidly between architecture, ceramics and furniture, merging artisanal techniques — hand-gouged porcelain, mixed materials, sculptural woodworking — with a contemporary architect’s eye for volume and light. Every piece she designs carries the same instinct: to treat an object as a small building, considered from every angle.
The Double Traces Shade continues Sophie Dries’s exploration of porcelain as a sculptural material, born from her collaboration with ceramists Thomas Vivant and Felix Galland on the Traces collection. Trained as an architect before turning to design, Dries approaches the wall sconce the way she would a small structure, letting two stacked, hand-gouged shades create depth and rhythm rather than simple illumination.
Pictured here in white porcelain with a glossy glaze, the piece is also offered in black porcelain or a matte finish, its light rising gently from below the upper shade. Each sconce is chiselled out by hand, so the texture of every piece carries small, deliberate variations. Suitable for bathroom installation, the Double Traces Shade brings the same overlapping, mirroring logic that runs through the entire Traces family of lighting.
