Sophie Dries trained as an architect before working under Jean Nouvel, Pierre Yovanovitch and Christian Liaigre. She now runs her own studio between Paris and Milan, and was awarded the AD Range Rover Design Award of the Year.

The Diablo Traces Ceramic Shade by architect and designer Sophie Dries turns a wall sconce into a small study in texture and light. Created in collaboration with French ceramists Thomas Vivant and Felix Galland, this double-shade design reflects Dries’s training as an architect: rather than simply illuminating a wall, it sculpts the space around it, casting light both upward and downward in a quiet architectural gesture.

Hand-gouged porcelain gives each shade its distinctive chiselled surface, finished here in white with a glossy glaze, and also available in black porcelain or a matte finish. Sophie Dries plays with overlapping, mirroring forms across the Traces collection, so that no two sconces read quite the same way. Suitable for bathroom use, each piece bears the subtle handmade irregularities of its porcelain, a reminder that it passed through an artisan’s hands before it reached the wall.
