Our video featuring the suspended bookcase went viral in a heartbeat: its playfulness and magical trick-like quality captured the imagination of many, sparkling curiosity and enchantment. However, there is more than meets the eye. The suspended bookcase is a very clever, multipurpose design that is as functional as it is decorative. Created by a master cabinetmaker and engineer, it can act as both a window and a shutter, allowing to either hide or slowly reveal a connection between two rooms, such as a dining room and a kitchen, or the games room and a home bar. Inspired by the simple mechanism of a pulley, the design is suspended to a rope with pulleys and steel counterweights, enabling a smooth opening and closing with a simple gesture of the hand.
When closed, it adds a sculptural, decorative feel to the wall, thanks to the symmetrical elements – the rope and the steel weights – that flank the wooden frame. We love its playfulness, and understated elegance, and we love how it conjures a somewhat retro aesthetic from the fifties, revived and revisited for 21st-century homes… Created by Virieu di Petrillo in collaboration with the Iota Element Atelier, and edited by Mayaro, the Suspended Bookcase is available in a variety of woods, including American walnut, oak, sycamore and blackened pearwood. The two steel counterweights are treated with hematite for a rusty effect. Do contact us for bespoke wood and dimensions, as well as for specific installation instructions.
