Charlotte Biltgen spent years at India Mahdavi’s Paris practice, absorbing a devotion to bold colour and confident, sculptural form. She belongs to the French “ensemblier” lineage, in which furniture, textile and architecture are conceived together, her signature vocabulary of oak, brass, marble and plaster returning always to soft, rounded lines she treats as a kind of quiet femininity running through every design.
Extended into a sofa, the Klay design keeps the same club-chair intimacy Biltgen imagined for a seaside terrace, now resting on stained oak feet and upholstered in Dedar’s Adamo & Eva velvet in a soft polline tone. A bespoke pair of cushions in Pierre Frey’s Papunya fabric punctuates the silhouette, adding pattern to the sofa’s otherwise pared-back curves. Biltgen calls the roundness running through every cushion and armrest a deliberate expression of softness and femininity.
