Straw marquetry is unforgiving work: each stalk is split, flattened, and glued strand by strand onto the surface, its natural sheen shifting with the angle of light as it catches each strand. Revived in France during the Art Deco years by decorators such as Jean-Michel Frank, the technique remains a rare, labour-intensive craft today, one that Caroline Sarkozy and Laurent Bourgois return to often across their furniture and lighting. Here it wraps the base in warm, golden geometry set against brass, giving the lamp a quiet architectural clarity in keeping with the pair’s classical, “à la française” sensibility. The shade, cut from an ivory Drap de Flandres, a dense, matte linen rooted in northern French textile weaving, tempers the straw’s warmth into a soft, diffused glow — suited to a console or bedside table where texture rewards a closer look.
Trained at Parsons School of Design in New York, Caroline Sarkozy gained extensive experience working for the exacting Andrée Putman. A nomadic childhood between Asia, the Middle East and the USA, gives her a panoramic approach to influences and styles. Laurent Bourgois graduated from the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and has over the years focused on Architecture and Interior Architecture projects in the private sector. Together, they have a refreshing take on classical style and absolute elegance achieved through exquisite “A la française” craftsmanship, a trademark of their interiors, which is appreciated by their private international clientele.
