Their signature is straw marquetry — paille marquetée, the painstaking craft that lines their Iris coffee table — alongside a house-made opaline glass crystal, produced in their own French atelier, that diffuses light with the soft glow of alabaster. Each collection reads as a quiet homage: to Jean-Michel Frank, to Gio Ponti, to a French modernism CSLB continues to reinterpret today.
The Cordage Lamp by CSLB Studio pays direct tribute to Gio Ponti’s Bilia lamp, a piece Caroline Sarkozy and Laurent Bourgois hold dear. “This is a tribute to the work of Gio Ponti,” Sarkozy explains. “It marks both our desire to remember the history of design and our taste for a refined and classic modernity.” The lamp reinterprets Ponti’s mid-century Italian rigor through a distinctly French, more sculptural lens.
Crafted in brass and plaster with a white, mouth-blown crystal shade, the piece combines the softness of hand-worked plaster with the translucence of polished glass, a pairing the duo describes as central to their taste. Available with dimmable electrification for Europe, the UK or the US, and made to bespoke dimensions and finishes, the Cordage Lamp turns a well-loved design reference into an object with its own quiet identity.
Trained at Parsons School of Design in New York, Caroline Sarkozy gained extensive experience working for the exacting Andrée Putman. A nomadic childhood between Asia, the Middle East and the USA, gives her a panoramic approach to influences and styles. Laurent Bourgois graduated from the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and has over the years focused on Architecture and Interior Architecture projects in the private sector. Together, they have a refreshing take on classical style and absolute elegance achieved through exquisite “A la française” craftsmanship, a trademark of their interiors, which is appreciated by their private international clientele.
