Based in the Apuan Alps, Mmairo controls every step of production in-house, from quarry extraction to finished object, collaborating with international designers, architects and artists on furniture and objects.
“The sculptor doesn’t try to translate his thought into marble: he thinks in marble, directly, as if everything were already marble,” wrote André Gide, and his words perfectly capture the practice of Jacopo Simonetti, who designed the Lone Reef Table Lamp for Mmairo, the Carrara-based marble atelier whose name derives from the ancient Greek marmairo, meaning to shine. Simonetti approaches each block not as raw material to be tamed but as a form already latent within the stone, waiting to surface.
Carved from Bianco Michelangelo, the luminous white marble long favored by sculptors for its fine, even grain, and Fior di Pesco Cornico, prized for its swirling grey-blue veining, the lamp reads as an outcropping of natural rock rather than a manufactured object, its irregular silhouette recalling a lone reef rising from still water. Bespoke dimensions and finishes are available on request, each lamp produced entirely within Mmairo’s own workshops in the Apuan Alps.
