The Iqanda Table LampĀ by Elliott Barnes x Tisserant Art&Style is manufactured in the renowned Parisian workshop of metalwork specialist Tisserant Art&Style. The word Iqanda means egg in Xhosa, a South African language. Barnes revisits the use of ostrich eggshells favoured during the times of Arts Decoratifs whilst tapping into the imaginary of the Bronze Age. By modifying the shape of the shell and orienting it with a functional (not just decorative) purpose, he explores new ideas in lighting fixtures. By cutting the shells into halves and incorporating the LED lights, Barnes creates one-of-a-kind lights.Ā Each piece is defined by its own singularity: the brass structure and lighting system are the same, however, the ostrich eggshell domes are each unique.Ā
Elliott Barnes graduated from Cornell University, New York with a master’s in architecture and urbanism and has been trained alongside Arthur Erikson and AndrĆ©e Putman. His signature style is defined by minimal lines, the power and possibilities of new materials Ā and the play of light which all intertwine with his poetic sensibilities and the desire for each project to tell a story. His work is exquisitely finished and yields a strong emotional power. For him, an object should never forget its function. Luxurious finishes are of no importance if they merely serve to add another flourish or embellishment. He prefers to concentrate on the details and the purpose of the object.
