The soft, pillowy shapes within the Marzipan coffee table by Daniel Hayden are a playful contrast to the solidity and weight of the timber from which they are made. The textural, hand-carved top detail is inspired by the process of shaping the saddles in traditional welsh and windsor chairs.
This coffee table is crafted from solid wood, a natural material that responds to temperature and humidity changes by expanding and contracting. Variations in grain, colour, and texture are inherent and predictable.
The idiosyncratic, playful nature of Daniel Hayden’s work stems from his interest in the way in which shapes and proportions can be manipulated to create the impression of personalities within inanimate everyday objects. His design process typically involves sketching until a ‘character’ begins to appear, and then exaggerating the elements bringing out that character until it feels whole.
