Designed by Daniel Hayden, the Chapel Chair takes an antique monk’s seat as its initial inspiration. Its contemporary form is balanced by materials and techniques that evoke a quiet, 20th-century ‘hand-made modernism’. The woven natural rush of the seat develops a warm golden hue as it ages.
This chair is crafted from solid wood, a natural material that responds to temperature and humidity changes by expanding and contracting. Variations in grain, colour, and texture are inherent and predictable.
The idiosyncratic, playful nature of Daniel Hayden’s work stems from his interest in the way in which shapes and proportions can be manipulated to create the impression of personalities within inanimate everyday objects. His design process typically involves sketching until a ‘character’ begins to appear, and then exaggerating the elements bringing out that character until it feels whole.
