De La Espada was founded by Fátima de la Espada and Luís de Oliveira, a husband-and-wife team from Madrid and Porto who opened their first shop in London and never stopped designing and building furniture themselves. Early collections drew on the Arts & Crafts tradition and the pared-back architecture of Tadao Ando and John Pawson — a lineage still visible in every mortise-and-tenon joint. Today the company designs, engineers and builds nearly everything in-house at its solar-powered workshop on Portugal’s Silver Coast, where around a hundred craftspeople combine advanced machinery with hand-finishing on solid American walnut, oak and ash.
The fully upholstered Throne dining chair is shown in Kvadrat’s Phlox fabric in colour 883 over a structure in Danish oiled oak, also available in ash or walnut, wrapping the whole seat and back in fabric rather than leaving any wood exposed as the rattan version does. It brings the enveloping comfort of the Throne lounge chair to a dining-height seat.
