Long before ‘craft’ became a marketing word, De La Espada was quietly building furniture the hard way. Founded by Fátima de la Espada and Luís de Oliveira, the company grew out of a small family carpentry business in Spain into one of the most respected names in contemporary solid-wood furniture, collaborating over the years with Luca Nichetto, Neri & Hu, Jason Miller and Matthew Hilton. Every piece is still made at their own production facility on Portugal’s Silver Coast, in walnut, oak or ash, oiled and finished by hand.
Designed with Luca Nichetto, the wide-armed Sela lounge chair is shown with its seat and back in a dark tan saddle leather over a structure in Danish oiled walnut, also available in black or natural leather, or dressed instead in Kvadrat’s Base fabric over an oxidised oak frame. The saddle leather is meant to age and soften with use, so the chair is designed to look better the longer it is lived with.

Contrary to the way the majority of products are made today, a single workshop on Portugal’s Silver Coast is the beating heart of every De La Espada piece. It is from one of Europe’s most significant centres of excellence in woodworking and upholstery that their furniture is sent directly to homes and public spaces all over the world. They have an in-house design studio, De La Espada Atelier, and also collaborate with nine leading international designers, as well as Portuguese artisans whose craft they highlight in their products. De La Espada represents true luxury: creativity rather than imitation; extensive research and development; traditional methods that are in scarce supply; a singular aesthetic point-of-view; and no compromise when it comes to materials or effort.
