De La Espada was founded by Fátima de la Espada and Luís de Oliveira, a husband-and-wife team from Madrid and Porto who opened their first shop in London and never stopped designing and building furniture themselves. Early collections drew on the Arts & Crafts tradition and the pared-back architecture of Tadao Ando and John Pawson — a lineage still visible in every mortise-and-tenon joint. Today the company designs, engineers and builds nearly everything in-house at its solar-powered workshop on Portugal’s Silver Coast, where around a hundred craftspeople combine advanced machinery with hand-finishing on solid American walnut, oak and ash.

Designed with Anthony Guerrée, the Altair chair is shown upholstered in a brown natural-grain leather on a base in oxidised oak, also available in ash or walnut, and is also shown in Kvadrat’s Faith and Base fabrics. Its name suggests a fixed point to navigate by, and the chair’s compact, upright form does read as a kind of dependable anchor for a dining setting.
