De La Espada was founded by Fátima de la Espada and Luís de Oliveira, a husband-and-wife team from Madrid and Porto who opened their first shop in London and never stopped designing and building furniture themselves. Early collections drew on the Arts & Crafts tradition and the pared-back architecture of Tadao Ando and John Pawson — a lineage still visible in every mortise-and-tenon joint. Today the company designs, engineers and builds nearly everything in-house at its solar-powered workshop on Portugal’s Silver Coast, where around a hundred craftspeople combine advanced machinery with hand-finishing on solid American walnut, oak and ash.
Designed with Anthony Guerrée, the Vega A dining chair is shown in black oiled walnut upholstered in finished leather in brown, also pictured in oxidised oak with leather in a sandy dune tone, and available in other timber finishes, fabrics and leathers. Its low, wide backrest is built for lingering conversation at the table rather than quick meals.
