Paul László was a Hungarian-born architect and designer who fled Nazi persecution in Europe and rebuilt his career from a Beverly Hills studio on Rodeo Drive.
The Carmelina Chair 1950 holds a particularly personal place in Paul László’s body of work: it was custom-made in 1947 for László’s own house, at a moment when the Hungarian-born designer, having fled Nazi persecution just over a decade earlier, was fully established as one of Beverly Hills’s most sought-after architects and decorators. Designing for himself, László allowed the chair a warmth and ease he reserved for his most intimate commissions.
The chair’s structure is turned in a hazelnut-toned ash with a matte varnish, upholstered here in Billy Beige, a fabric from Ecart’s own textile collection, with bespoke fabrics available on request. Documented in Julius Shulman’s archival photography, now part of the Getty Research Institute’s collection, and reissued by Ecart, the Carmelina Chair offers a rare, direct window into how László chose to live among his own designs.
Founded in the late seventies, Ecart is the brainchild of the ineffable Andrée Putman, the brilliant aesthete who singlehandedly revived the neglected work of some great designers from the 1930s, including René Herbst, Jean-Michel Frank, Pierre Chareau and Eileen Gray. Following her instinct informed by her unique taste, Putman made the rather counterintuitive choice of re-editing some iconic designs from the past, despite the fact that, at the time, the business of furniture was all about newness.
