Paul László was a Hungarian-born architect and designer who fled Nazi persecution in Europe and rebuilt his career from a Beverly Hills studio on Rodeo Drive.
Companion to the Avondale Table Lamp, the Avondale Sideboard 1950 extends Paul László’s honey-ash vocabulary into a larger case piece, originally manufactured by Brown Saltman around 1950 for the same Southern California clientele László had cultivated since opening his Rodeo Drive studio in 1941. The sideboard’s clean, unornamented volume reflects László’s belief that storage furniture could be as architecturally considered as a house itself.
Crafted in honey-toned ash with a matte varnish finish, the sideboard’s warm, understated surface was designed to anchor a dining or living room without competing with the artwork and objects László’s clients so often displayed above it. Documented through Julius Shulman’s archival photography at the Getty Research Institute and reissued today by Ecart, the piece remains a quietly confident example of László’s American-era case goods.
Paul László (1900–1993) was a Hungarian-born architect and designer whose career bridged European modernism and postwar American luxury. Trained in Stuttgart and active in Vienna during the interwar years, he developed a refined modern language that gained international attention through leading design journals. Fleeing Europe during World War II, he settled in California and became a sought-after architect for industrialists and Hollywood elites, designing meticulously controlled interiors conceived as total works of art. Dubbed “the Rich Man’s Architect,” László combined disciplined elegance with visionary thinking, from bespoke residences and furniture to speculative projects like the underground city Atomville.
