László’s Californian clients included Cary Grant, Barbara Hutton and Billy Wilder; his archive is today re-edited by Ecart and documented largely through Julius Shulman’s photography held at the Getty Research Institute.
Named after the Pacific Palisades, the Los Angeles neighborhood perched above the ocean, the Palisades Coffee Table 1950 was custom-made by Paul László for a private interior design project around 1950. The table’s name situates it precisely within the Californian landscape László had grown to love since fleeing Europe in 1936, a place whose light and openness shaped his entire American body of work.
The tabletop, shown here in lucite and also available in glass, appears almost to float above legs turned in a dark chocolate-toned ash finished with a matte varnish, a contrast between transparency and solid wood that László used to keep the table visually light within a room. Offered with bespoke dimensions on request and documented via Julius Shulman’s photography at the Getty Research Institute, the piece is now reissued by Ecart for interiors seeking that same sense of airborne calm.
Founded in the late seventies, Ecart is the brainchild of the ineffable Andrée Putman, the brilliant aesthete who singlehandedly revived the neglected work of some great designers from the 1930s, including René Herbst, Jean-Michel Frank, Pierre Chareau and Eileen Gray. Following her instinct informed by her unique taste, Putman made the rather counterintuitive choice of re-editing some iconic designs from the past, despite the fact that, at the time, the business of furniture was all about newness.
