The Rodeo Chair 1947 takes its name from Rodeo Drive, the Beverly Hills street where Paul László maintained his design studio at number 362 for more than twenty-five years after fleeing Europe in 1936. Manufactured originally by Brown Saltman between 1947 and 1953, the chair captures the moment László’s practice shifted from custom residential commissions toward furniture produced for a wider American public.
The frame is turned in tobacco-toned ash finished with a matte varnish and upholstered in Gary Sand Gold, a fabric from Ecart’s own collection, with bespoke fabrics available on request for those seeking a personal variation. Documented through Julius Shulman’s archival photography at the Getty Research Institute and reissued today by Ecart, the Rodeo Chair carries the address of László’s professional life directly into its name.
Founded in the late seventies, Ecart is the brainchild of the ineffable Andrée Putman, the brilliant aesthete who singlehandedly revived the neglected work of some great designers from the 1930s, including René Herbst, Jean-Michel Frank, Pierre Chareau and Eileen Gray. Following her instinct informed by her unique taste, Putman made the rather counterintuitive choice of re-editing some iconic designs from the past, despite the fact that, at the time, the business of furniture was all about newness.
