With the Arles Chair, Sébastien Caporusso continues an ongoing dialogue between architecture and craft. The Brussels-based designer, celebrated as Designer of the Year at Belgium’s Biennale Interieur, approaches every piece as an exercise in noble, tactile materials — stone, marble, brass, bronze — shaped into eclectic, dreamlike forms that are as poetic as they are livable.

Carved from solid poplar, the chair rests on a tripod base whose gentle arcs recall the ancient Roman aqueduct that still stands in the city of Arles, transforming a structural memory of engineering into a piece of everyday furniture. The seat is finished in fine leather, softening the sculptural base with a quietly tactile counterpoint.
