The Akar Chair Teak carries the signature of Atelier Pendhapa, founded by French architect Antonin Hautefort and Indonesian architect Ignatio Tenggara. Named after the pendhapa, the open pavilion at the heart of traditional Javanese homes, the atelier treats furniture as architecture in miniature, carving solid wood by hand and pairing it with hand-woven French rattan mesh mounted on a solid wooden core.
Created with Métaphores, sister house to Hermès, this Akar chair is carved in solid black teak and upholstered in the Piaffer horsehair fabric in corde alongside Palanque in jade, or in natural teak dressed in Gael Chine ecru gris — oak and lacquer versions are also available. Named after the Indonesian word for ‘roots,’ each limited-edition piece pairs undulating hand-carved wood with hand-woven Le Crin horsehair, so the frame reads like jewellery mounting a gemstone.
Both architects by training, Antonin Hautefort and Ignatio Tenggara met at the Architectural Association in London while completing their master of Architecture. While Antonin grew up in France, Ignatio comes from Indonesia: their radically different cultural background and their fascination for local craftsmanship motivated them to start a design studio together. Atelier Pendhapa was founded in 2019 with the ambition to dissolve the boundaries between furniture and architecture. They have since been developing projects of various scales from bespoke pieces and interior design to holistic architectural projects all around the world.
