De La Espada’s founders, Fátima de la Espada and Luís de Oliveira, came to furniture almost by accident — a family carpentry workshop in Spain that became a design house shown in London, New York and Milan. Their approach has never changed: honest joinery, solid timber, and a roster of collaborators — from Luca Nichetto to Anthony Guerrée — invited to draw pieces that respect the material as much as the form. Production stays in-house, at their own solar-powered workshop on Portugal’s Silver Coast.
Designed with Anthony Guerrée, the Cursa dining chair is shown in Kvadrat’s Elle fabric in colour 220, also pictured in Kvadrat’s Base fabric in colour 007, its fully upholstered, armless silhouette echoing the Cursa lounge chair’s soft, cocooning form at dining height. With no wood or leather detail exposed, the fabric alone carries the whole design.
De La Espada furniture reflects a confident command of generations-old craft wisdom and research-led modern design. Contrary to the way the majority of products are made today, a single workshop on Portugal’s Silver Coast is the beating heart of every De La Espada piece. It is from one of Europe’s most significant centres of excellence in woodworking and upholstery that their furniture is sent directly to homes and public spaces all over the world. They have an in-house design studio, De La Espada Atelier, and also collaborate with nine leading international designers, as well as Portuguese artisans whose craft they highlight in their products. De La Espada represents true luxury: creativity rather than imitation; extensive research and development; traditional methods that are in scarce supply; a singular aesthetic point-of-view; and no compromise when it comes to materials or effort.
