De La Espada was founded by Fátima de la Espada and Luís de Oliveira, a husband-and-wife team from Madrid and Porto who opened their first shop in London and never stopped designing and building furniture themselves. Early collections drew on the Arts & Crafts tradition and the pared-back architecture of Tadao Ando and John Pawson — a lineage still visible in every mortise-and-tenon joint. Today the company designs, engineers and builds nearly everything in-house at its solar-powered workshop on Portugal’s Silver Coast, where around a hundred craftspeople combine advanced machinery with hand-finishing on solid American walnut, oak and ash.
The Capo bar stool, designed with Neri & Hu, is shown upholstered in Kvadrat’s Vidar fabric in colour 472 over a base in Danish oiled walnut, also available in ash or oak, and is also pictured upholstered in Kvadrat’s Canvas fabric in colour 974. It carries the same rounded, sculptural legs as the Capo dining chair up to counter height.
