Since the seventeenth century, the Mobilier National has served as the guardian of France’s decorative arts heritage, commissioning and preserving furniture for the French Republic’s most prestigious residences and embassies. In recent years the institution has opened its collections to a new generation of makers, selecting only a handful of contemporary designers each year whose work is judged worthy of entering the nation’s permanent patrimony, alongside centuries of royal and republican craftsmanship.
Sénéquier comes from a family of Saint-Tropez farmers and trained in industrial design in Marseille and Paris before working alongside architect Kengo Kuma in Japan, an itinerary that shaped his Riviera Chairs, a signed limited edition now in the Mobilier National’s permanent collection. Digitally milled from beech and lacquered in a deep burgundy red, the seat is hand-woven from rope in the same tone, reinterpreting the traditional woven chairs of the Mediterranean coast with a nod to the storied Café Sénéquier of his hometown.
