László’s Californian clients included Cary Grant, Barbara Hutton and Billy Wilder; his archive is today re-edited by Ecart and documented largely through Julius Shulman’s photography held at the Getty Research Institute.

The Avondale Table Lamp 1950 shows Paul László working at the intersection of furniture and light, pairing a turned ash base with patinated brass details in a design manufactured originally by Brown Saltman around 1950. László, whose Beverly Hills clientele included Cary Grant and Billy Wilder, understood lighting as an essential tool for sculpting the mood of a room, not merely a source of illumination.

Finished in a honey-toned ash with matte varnish and accented in warm, patinated brass, the lamp is topped with a silk shade in this edition, its soft glow diffusing through the fabric to cast the gentle, flattering light László favored for the living rooms of his Hollywood clients. Reissued by Ecart and documented through Julius Shulman’s Getty Research Institute archive, the Avondale lamp remains a quiet, glowing reminder of László’s mastery of postwar Californian elegance.
