Paul László was a Hungarian-born architect and designer who fled Nazi persecution in Europe and rebuilt his career from a Beverly Hills studio on Rodeo Drive.
Named for the mythical land of pastoral harmony, the Arcadia Chair 1950 was designed by Paul László for Glenn of California, one of the manufacturers that helped bring his softened, sun-inflected modernism to postwar American homes. The chair’s frame, worked in a warm tobacco-toned ash, embodies László’s belief that furniture in California should feel relaxed and hospitable rather than severe.
Its seat and back are woven in tinted rattan, a natural material László favored for its lightness and its ability to breathe in the mild Californian climate, and the frame is finished with a matte varnish that lets the ash’s tobacco tone read as warm rather than glossy. Documented in the archival photography of Julius Shulman, now held at the Getty Research Institute, the Arcadia Chair remains one of the clearest expressions of László’s Arcadia collection for Glenn of California, reissued today by Ecart in solid ash.
Founded in the late seventies, Ecart is the brainchild of the ineffable Andrée Putman, the brilliant aesthete who singlehandedly revived the neglected work of some great designers from the 1930s, including René Herbst, Jean-Michel Frank, Pierre Chareau and Eileen Gray. Following her instinct informed by her unique taste, Putman made the rather counterintuitive choice of re-editing some iconic designs from the past, despite the fact that, at the time, the business of furniture was all about newness.
