De La Espada was founded by Fátima de la Espada and Luís de Oliveira, a husband-and-wife team from Madrid and Porto who opened their first shop in London and never stopped designing and building furniture themselves. Early collections drew on the Arts & Crafts tradition and the pared-back architecture of Tadao Ando and John Pawson — a lineage still visible in every mortise-and-tenon joint. Today the company designs, engineers and builds nearly everything in-house at its solar-powered workshop on Portugal’s Silver Coast, where around a hundred craftspeople combine advanced machinery with hand-finishing on solid American walnut, oak and ash.

Leather and fabric are combined rather than choosing one or the other, giving the chair two different textures to rest against.

It is from one of Europe’s most significant centres of excellence in woodworking and upholstery that their furniture is sent directly to homes and public spaces all over the world. They have an in-house design studio, De La Espada Atelier, and also collaborate with nine leading international designers, as well as Portuguese artisans whose craft they highlight in their products. De La Espada represents true luxury: creativity rather than imitation; extensive research and development; traditional methods that are in scarce supply; a singular aesthetic point-of-view; and no compromise when it comes to materials or effort.
