De La Espada was founded by Fátima de la Espada and Luís de Oliveira, a husband-and-wife team from Madrid and Porto who opened their first shop in London and never stopped designing and building furniture themselves. Early collections drew on the Arts & Crafts tradition and the pared-back architecture of Tadao Ando and John Pawson — a lineage still visible in every mortise-and-tenon joint. Today the company designs, engineers and builds nearly everything in-house at its solar-powered workshop on Portugal’s Silver Coast, where around a hundred craftspeople combine advanced machinery with hand-finishing on solid American walnut, oak and ash.

Designed with Anthony Guerrée, the Cursa lounge chair is shown upholstered entirely in soft Mohawi sheepskin, its rounded, cocooning form built to be read as much by touch as by eye. With no wood or metal visible in the finished piece, the sheepskin itself becomes both the chair’s structure and its statement.
