De La Espada was founded by Fátima de la Espada and Luís de Oliveira, a husband-and-wife team from Madrid and Porto who opened their first shop in London and never stopped designing and building furniture themselves. Early collections drew on the Arts & Crafts tradition and the pared-back architecture of Tadao Ando and John Pawson — a lineage still visible in every mortise-and-tenon joint. Today the company designs, engineers and builds nearly everything in-house at its solar-powered workshop on Portugal’s Silver Coast, where around a hundred craftspeople combine advanced machinery with hand-finishing on solid American walnut, oak and ash.
The copper version of the Orion dining table, designed with Anthony Guerrée, pairs a timber top with a base split half in copper and half in timber, pictured here in oxidised oak, also shown in Danish oiled walnut, the base available in wood alone or detailed with brass or copper. The metal half of the base catches the light in a way the slatted all-wood version does not.
