The folding screen In Praise of shadows was created by the Koseido atelier for the exhibition La Pudeur, presented at Métiers Rares (Paris) in January 2026, at the initiative of Raphaëlle Le Baud. Design and artistic direction were led by Emi Hirasawa-Chateau.
A master of hyōgu, the art of mounting and surface finishing, Koseido constructs the surface through the compression of silver leaf, worked to evoke the structure of a tatami. This process produces a dense and even material that responds subtly to light. Depending on the lighting conditions, the surface reveals variations in tone and sheen, shifting between matte areas and more reflective highlights. This modulation, never uniform, creates a quiet depth and establishes a sensitive relationship with the viewer, where perception unfolds gradually and with restraint.
