The Water Lily Candle Holder emerges from Goossens, the Paris maison whose founder Robert Goossens first turned a goldsmith’s eye on the decorative arts in 1950, translating haute joaillerie techniques onto tables, mirrors and lighting. Coco Chanel’s early patronage sealed the atelier’s reputation for turning humble raw materials into gilded treasures, a philosophy the Water Lily Candle Holder still embodies today.
In the Water Lily Candle Holder, gilded brass petals cradle a single flame the way real lily pads cradle drops of water, a motif Goossens has returned to since the 1950s for its ability to turn something as simple as a candle into a jeweled centerpiece. Finished in 24-carat yellow gold with a shining patina, it comes complete with its own candle, ready to light a table the moment it arrives.
Following their meeting in 1953, Gabrielle Chanel encouraged Robert Goossens to create his first decorative objects: a trio of gilded bronze lions supporting a rock crystal globe, followed by a water lily pedestal table and a table with a wheat sheaf base. These are now among Goossens’ most iconic creations. By entering the world of decorative arts, Goossens Paris demonstrated his ability to move from the scale of jewellery to that of furniture and art objects, using the same signature materials (gold-plated metal and rock crystals) and the same tools and techniques.
