Drawing on Nordic restraint and French storytelling, Mathieu Gustafsson treats every cabinet or table as a small narrative object rather than a purely functional one. For The Invisible Collection, Gustafsson constructs each piece from selected Swedish pine and naturally tanned premium Swedish saddle leather, letting the leather’s inlaid silhouette — an apple, a puddle, a keyhole — carry the meaning of the design.
Slab pairs a thick leather inlay, inspired by the striated patterns of root veneer, with the strict geometric lines of a pine tabletop finished in natural varnish. Gustafsson selected a rich cognac tone of naturally tanned Swedish saddle leather to echo the warmth of wood grain itself, creating a surface where two very different materials appear to be telling the same story. Built from selected Swedish pine, the table is designed to develop a deeper patina in its leather inlay the longer it lives in a room.
From his Stockholm studio, founded in 2013, Mathieu works on a variety of projects spanning furniture design and research into new sustainable materials. Although rooted in his Scandinavian heritage—clean, minimal, and understated—Mathieu tries to infuse it with a layer of originality often drawn from his French background. His process often starts with a specific material or technique that he wants to reinterpret or approach from a fresh perspective.
