Plaster has long been a sculptor’s material of first thought — quick to work, quick to correct, capable of holding the trace of a hand in a way that bronze or wood cannot. Stephen Antonson, trained as a sculptor and painter before turning to furniture, works this way deliberately: plaster is brushed on in successive layers, then sanded, rasped and resanded until the surface settles into its final form. The result carries a softness of edge and a slight irregularity that no mould-cast piece can replicate — each bowl bears the evidence of having been shaped rather than reproduced. Antonson’s pieces tend to sit between classicism and invention, familiar in silhouette but never quite predictable in surface. On a console or dining table, the bowl reads as sculpture that happens to hold things — object first, function second.
