20th Century Design brings authentic mid-century furniture back into circulation through the hands of Ateliers Jouffre, the French upholstery house founded over thirty years ago in Lyon and honored in 2006 with the state’s Entreprises du Patrimoine Vivant label for living heritage craftsmanship.
The Teckel Sofa by Michel Mortier, designed in 1950 and brought back through Ateliers Jouffre’s restoration work for 20th Century Design, takes its playful name from the dachshund’s low, elongated silhouette — a witty, distinctly French reading of mid-century form.
Structured in walnut and delivered ready for upholstery in the fabric of the client’s choosing, the sofa’s long, low profile makes it as much a sculptural object as a place to sit. Jouffre’s restoration preserves Mortier’s original proportions exactly, so the sofa’s period charm survives intact beneath its new, entirely contemporary covering.
