Designed within the storied Parisian workshop of Goossens, the Water Lily Mirror continues a lineage that began in 1950, when goldsmith Robert Goossens started reimagining rock crystal, glass paste and gilded bronze as jewelry-like objects for the home. Coco Chanel became an early champion, and today, housed within the Chanel maison, that same alchemy of craft and glamour lives on in the Water Lily Mirror.
Framed entirely in gilded brass lily pads finished with a shining 24-carat gold bath, the Water Lily Mirror turns a wall fixture into a piece of jewelry for the room, each petal catching a different angle of light as you pass. It is a motif Goossens has kept in continuous production since Robert Goossens first began translating jewelry techniques onto decorative objects for Coco Chanel in the 1950s.
Following their meeting in 1953, Gabrielle Chanel encouraged Robert Goossens to create his first decorative objects: a trio of gilded bronze lions supporting a rock crystal globe, followed by a water lily pedestal table and a table with a wheat sheaf base. These are now among Goossens’ most iconic creations. By entering the world of decorative arts, Goossens Paris demonstrated his ability to move from the scale of jewellery to that of furniture and art objects, using the same signature materials (gold-plated metal and rock crystals) and the same tools and techniques.
