Designed within the storied Parisian workshop of Goossens, the Wheat Mirror continues a lineage that began in 1950, when goldsmith Robert Goossens started reimagining rock crystal, glass paste and gilded bronze as jewelry-like objects for the home. Coco Chanel became an early champion, and today, housed within the Chanel maison, that same alchemy of craft and glamour lives on in the Wheat Mirror.
A hundred individual ears of wheat, cast in metal with a brass finish and dipped in yellow gold, encircle the Wheat Mirror in a dense, almost baroque border, each stalk catching the light at a slightly different angle. It is one of the more labor-intensive pieces in the collection, a reminder that Goossens still counts its ornament by hand.
Following their meeting in 1953, Gabrielle Chanel encouraged Robert Goossens to create his first decorative objects: a trio of gilded bronze lions supporting a rock crystal globe, followed by a water lily pedestal table and a table with a wheat sheaf base. These are now among Goossens’ most iconic creations. By entering the world of decorative arts, Goossens Paris demonstrated his ability to move from the scale of jewellery to that of furniture and art objects, using the same signature materials (gold-plated metal and rock crystals) and the same tools and techniques.
