Few names in Paris carry as much gilded history as Goossens, the goldsmithing maison behind the Wheat Heritage Mirror. Founded in 1950 by Robert Goossens and famously championed by Coco Chanel, the atelier has always worked at the meeting point of jewelry and furniture, treating brass and crystal with the same reverence a jeweler gives to gold.
A dense ring of gilded brass wheat ears, finished with a shining 24-carat gold bath, frames the Wheat Heritage Mirror like a laurel crown for the wall. The wheat motif is one of Goossens’ oldest, a nod to the naturalistic jewelry the maison crafted before Coco Chanel first commissioned it in 1953, and it still carries the same sense of hand-worked abundance today.
Following their meeting in 1953, Gabrielle Chanel encouraged Robert Goossens to create his first decorative objects: a trio of gilded bronze lions supporting a rock crystal globe, followed by a water lily pedestal table and a table with a wheat sheaf base. These are now among Goossens’ most iconic creations. By entering the world of decorative arts, Goossens Paris demonstrated his ability to move from the scale of jewellery to that of furniture and art objects, using the same signature materials (gold-plated metal and rock crystals) and the same tools and techniques.
