Before ceramics, Johanna de Clisson was a still-life photographer — a training that shows in how carefully she stages the rough, sand-flecked texture of chamotte earthenware against the rounder, more sensual forms she gives it, all made in strictly limited editions from her Paris studio, Hiromi.
Limited to twelve pieces, the Punk wall lamp pairs white chamotte ceramic with metal, its name hinting at the rawness of the material underneath the glaze.
Playing with paradoxes, Johanna de Clisson simultaneously sculpts objects with brutalist and voluptuous shapes and volumes, as if two extremes were colliding. At the intersection of art and design, she embraces the beauty of constraint and asceticism as her personal guiding principles. Architecture is the primary source of reference for the artist, who cites Ryue Nishizawa, Tadao Ando, and Oscar Niemeyer as tutelary figures who inspire her desire to translate architectural forms into everyday life.
