Jacques Doucet (1853-1929) was the most celebrated couturier of Belle Époque Paris before assembling one of the most legendary private collections of his era, spanning eighteenth-century French decorative arts to the emerging avant-garde. He sold his period collection to fund his passion for the new, commissioning furniture from Eileen Gray and Pierre Legrain and acquiring Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon directly from the artist’s studio.
The bouclé edition of the Byzance Cushion completes the trio, keeping the same round, medallion-like form drawn from Byzantium’s mosaic opulence, a reference point that ran through Jacques Doucet’s collecting long before he pivoted entirely toward the avant-garde. Garcé & Dimofski choose a looped bouclé texture here, its nubbled surface catching light unevenly in a way that feels almost hand-worked.
Presented in Dedar’s Mammuth fabric in an avorio tone, and finished with the family’s signature natural oak button, the cushion trades the satin and velvet versions’ smoothness for tactile depth, proof that the same reference to Byzantine richness can be told through texture as easily as through colour. As a couturier, he mentored Paul Poiret and Madeleine Vionnet while dressing celebrities and heiresses. As a collector, he amassed the most legendary trove of rarities and masterpieces from the 18th century to the avant-garde, including Picasso, Klee, Matisse, and de Chirico, while commissioning furniture from Eileen Gray and Pierre Legrain, who decorated his last home, the fabled Studio Saint James. Now, his legacy lives on through a furniture collection available exclusively through Invisible Collection.
