Jacques Doucet (1853-1929) was the most celebrated couturier of Belle Époque Paris before assembling one of the most legendary private collections of his era, spanning eighteenth-century French decorative arts to the emerging avant-garde. He sold his period collection to fund his passion for the new, commissioning furniture from Eileen Gray and Pierre Legrain and acquiring Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon directly from the artist’s studio.
The Byzance Cushion takes its name from Byzantium, whose gold mosaics and jewel-toned opulence fascinated Jacques Doucet as much as any contemporary painting, a collector who moved as easily between Gothic ivories and Picasso as between centuries. Garcé & Dimofski translate that richness into a round cushion in satin fabric, its curved form recalling the medallions and roundels of Byzantine ornament.
Shown here in Dedar’s Tabularasa fabric in a mustard colourway, and also available in nacre or terre de roussillon tones, the cushion is finished with a decorative button in natural oak, a small grounding detail against the fabric’s warm, glowing colour. Bespoke fabrics and finishes let each cushion carry its own version of that inherited opulence.
Few men have left such an indelible mark on the imaginations of art patrons and aesthetes. Jacques Doucet was the archetype of the modern collector, with a love of culture as vast as his curiosity and flair for the new. As a couturier, he mentored Paul Poiret and Madeleine Vionnet while dressing celebrities and heiresses. As a collector, he amassed the most legendary trove of rarities and masterpieces from the 18th century to the avant-garde, including Picasso, Klee, Matisse, and de Chirico, while commissioning furniture from Eileen Gray and Pierre Legrain, who decorated his last home, the fabled Studio Saint James. Now, his legacy lives on through a furniture collection available exclusively through Invisible Collection.
