The Feather Lace Cushion is the work of Lemarié, one of the last great plumassiers, or feather artisans, in the world, founded in Paris in 1880 and brought to prominence when André Lemarié joined the family workshop in 1946 to begin supplying feathers to Balenciaga, Givenchy, Dior and Chanel, for whom Gabrielle Chanel herself commissioned in the 1950s the silk camellias that remain the maison’s most famous creation, some thirty thousand still handmade every year.
Acquired by Chanel in 1997 as part of the Paraffection initiative to safeguard France’s rarest ateliers, Lemarié brings that same couture-level feather artistry to this cushion, arranging individual feathers by hand into a floral lace motif across pure wool from Dedar. Because every feather is placed one by one, no two cushions, nor the pair made in mirrored symmetry, are ever quite identical.
