Each length of T’nalak begins as abaca, a fibre drawn from a plant of the banana family, which is stripped and sun-dried before it reaches the loom. The T’boli women of Lake Sebu, in South Cotabato on Mindanao, pattern the fibre before weaving by binding sections of it so that they resist the dye. This ikat technique has to be planned in full before a single pass is woven. Once off the loom, the cloth is polished by hand to bring up its natural sheen. On this cover the pattern runs on the diagonal, carrying the eye corner to corner across a ground of light sand. Among more regular weaves on a sofa or bed, the angled line adds movement.
