T’nalak is woven on a backstrap loom. The weaver’s own body holds the warp taut as she works, so the evenness of the cloth depends entirely on her control. Among the T’boli of Lake Sebu, in South Cotabato, the craft belongs to women and is considered sacred. On this cover, Kubo Curated gives the abaca cloth a ribbed relief that runs across the surface in light sand, a texture felt as much as seen. Set against smooth leather or plain linen upholstery, it brings depth without adding colour.
