Named Maison&Objet’s Designer of the Year and Interior Designer of the Year, Gonzalez has built a signature ‘chic mix and match’ style defined by bold color, layered pattern and a playful dialogue between historical periods and cultures.

The Mawu Chair by Laura Gonzalez takes its name from Mawu, the West African goddess of the moon and creation, and channels her quiet, commanding power into a sculptural silhouette. Carved from solid wood with a deep, embracing seat and flared, tapering legs, the chair reads less as a piece of furniture than as a figure standing guard in a room, a sculptural ode to feminine strength that has become one of Gonzalez’s most sought-after designs.

This edition is upholstered in Nimbus, a bouclé fabric by Dedar shown here in a soft nude tone (also available in a warm brebis, or sheep’s-wool, shade), its nubbled texture catching light across the chair’s rounded curves. The flared legs are turned in golden oak finished with a satin lacquer, available in other woods on request, so that the warmth of the timber grounds the chair’s otherwise otherworldly, goddess-like form.
