Named Maison&Objet’s Designer of the Year and Interior Designer of the Year, Gonzalez has built a signature ‘chic mix and match’ style defined by bold color, layered pattern and a playful dialogue between historical periods and cultures.
The Madras Galerie New York Armchair shares its lineage with Gonzalez’s Pondichéry Chair, both inspired by the painted wooden chairs produced in colonial India at the close of the nineteenth century, but here Laura Gonzalez scales the silhouette up into a fully upholstered armchair, capitalizing on clean lines and a deep, comfortable seat rather than raw painted wood. Offered as a limited edition, this is the very last piece available of this particular design.
Finished in shiny lacquered wood and upholstered in the same discontinued Fadini Borghi fabric from Pierre Frey, in the striped rigato mantova colorway used across Gonzalez’s Soho pieces, this armchair pairs a lustrous, jewel-like frame with a tactile, richly patterned seat. Because both the fabric and the edition are no longer produced, owning this armchair means owning an irreplaceable fragment of Gonzalez’s early exploration of historic Indian craft.
Laura Gonzalez founded her Parisian agency at 24, while still a student at the Ecole nationale supérieure d’architecture Paris-Malaquais. Since then, she’s been making a name for herself in the world of interior design delivering fantastic projects. Putting her motto into practice, “Live each project as a unique experience”, Laura was commissioned the 2021 Women Pavilion in Dubai, and has created some awe-inspiring interiors for luxury brands including Louboutin and Cartier. For the famed jeweler, she redesigned the historic 5th Avenue store in New York, and the “residence”, the private salon at the Paris Flagship in rue de la Paix, elevating the retail experience with her unmistakable style.
